Dear Heavenly Father, Please guide us with your wisdom and be with us as we begin to look for a new rector. Grant us patience and grace as a congregation, so that we may be unified in this time of transition. As our parish changes, grant us the courage and openness that we need to stay true to ourselves, while keeping you present in all that we do. All this we ask in the name of your son, Jesus Christ, Amen.
UPDATE – APPOINTMENT OF NEW RECTOR (April 30, 2021)
HOORAY! The Vestry is overjoyed to announce the appointment of our new Rector, the Rev. Anna Woofenden. Familiar to many of us from pre-pandemic times, when Anna and her husband David Howlett attended St. John’s after moving to Northampton in the fall of 2019, Anna brings the energy, creativity, leadership, pastoral nature, preaching, commitment to inclusion, openness to liturgical exploration, and experience with church growth that we sought in our parish profile. Anna’s work in social and racial justice is extraordinary. She has literally written the book on expanding outreach ministries that provide direct services to those living on the margins of society (see bio below).
We will be sharing much more about Anna and her family in the coming weeks. She is currently on parental leave and will begin her post on August 1.
Please join us in congratulating Anna and in thanking the Search Committee (Barbara Kellum, chair; Tamsin Jones Farmer; Jonathan Gosnell; Gwendolyn Greene; Maryanna Ham; Greg Macdonald; Allyson Spencer-Bunch; and Catherine Linberg) for executing a comprehensive search with a spectacular outcome.
For the Vestry,
Nancy Harvin, senior warden
The Parish Profile Committee began its work by sifting through and analyzing themes, trends and anonymous comments in the parish-wide survey completed in the Fall of 2019. In listening mode, they went out into the congregation interviewing a wide range of church members one on one or in small groups. The committee sponsored an afternoon holiday tea to gather more responses in a larger group setting. Church members were asked to offer written reflections on their personal experiences at St. John’s and their perspectives on the life of the community. Many contributed and their voices have been woven throughout the profile text. The committee decided on a newspaper format to be the best vehicle for capturing numerous perspectives and for highlighting the diversity of ministries, projects and small groups that comprise the multi-faceted corporate life of our church. In reading the “Good News” from St. John’s, we hope that you find yourself informed, challenged and inspired. The Addendum to the Parish Profile was created in February 2021 after the search was paused for a year during the COVID-19 pandemic.
To apply, please send cover letter, resume, and OTM profile to The Rev. Dr. Richard Simpson, Canon to the Ordinary at rsimpson@diocesewma.org

Composition of the Search Committee The search committee is made up of a diverse group who are equipped for the responsibility of assessing the knowledge, ability and skills of the candidates. Nominations and volunteers for the committee were given careful consideration, because balance of the committee is so crucial to the search process, not all nominees or volunteers may may have been appointed, we are so grateful to all who came forth in this process. Outcome: Selection of the right candidate to be Rector of St. John’s. This outcome may not be achieved in the ideal timeline. It is essential to get it right and to take as long as required to identify the right person.
